Sandra Aamodt: Why dieting doesn't usually work   TED

Dieting can make you gain weight and be bad for you in other ways

In the US, 80% of girls have been on a diet by the time they're 10 years old. In this honest, raw talk, neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt uses her personal story to frame an important lesson about how our brains manage our bodies, as she explores the science behind why dieting not only doesn't work, but is likely to do more harm than good. She suggests ideas for how to live a less diet-obsessed life, intuitively.

FTO gene as potential anti-obesity pills. (fat mass and obesity associated). Obesity and overeating are directly linked to excessive activity in a specific gene found in the human body, researchers have confirmed. Genetic connection to obesity found. Scientists at the University of Oxford have found the strongest evidence so far of a direct connection between the FTO (fat mass and obesity associated) gene and increased body weight, which may pave the way for developing a revolutionary anti-obesity pill. In this year's study, the scientists bred mice with extra copies of the FTO gene, finding that the test mice, although healthy, ate more and became fatter than normal mice. Professor Frances Ashcroft, (The Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics), one of the leaders of the research, said: "This work makes us confident that FTO is an important gene that contributes to obesity. "We can now think about developing drugs that turn down the activity of the FTO gene as potential anti-obesity pills." The study, funded by the MRC and the Wellcome Trust, was published in the journal Nature Genetics.

Best Diet ever discovered. Danish researchers say they have come up with the perfect diet to lose weight and keep it off. According to the world's largest diet study, the best way to lose weight is to stick to a high protein/low glycaemic index (GI) diet with more lean meats, low fat dairy products and beans and fewer refined carbohydrates such as white bread and rice. The researchers say that calorie counting is not needed; people should just eat until they feel full. The experts from the University of Copenhagen reached their conclusions after comparing five different diets which are recommended for losing and maintaining a healthy weight. Top 10 Diets Review. (National Health Service). Internet searches for diets spike in January, but with so many options to choose from it can be hard to find a weight loss plan that’s right for you. To help, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) here examines the pros and cons and gives its verdict on the 10 most searched-for commercial diets.

Conditional expression of the FTO gene product in rat INS-1 cells, (Public Med NCBI, National Center for Biotechnology Information), reveals its rapid turnover and a role in the profile of glucose-induced insulin secretion.

A naturally-occurring appetite suppressant has been discovered by UK scientists, who say it could pave the way for a diet drug without side effects. It may also have the potential to treat aspects of alcohol and drug abuse. Hemopressin is a small bit of protein which works by affecting the reward centres of the brain associated with pleasurable experiences such as eating, sex and drug highs. "It has long been known that the rewarding aspects of feeding behaviour influence our appetite, so that sometimes we eat for pleasure rather than hunger." Dr. Garron Dodd believes that the naturally-occurring hemopressin may not cause such side effects.  Scientists at the University of Manchester have discovered that hemopressin could be used as an appetite suppressant without having the side effects of many other drugs that are used for this purpose. In laboratory test was administrated hemopressin to mice and rats, which reduced significantly food intake. Hemopressin works by affecting the reward centres of the brain which make us feel happy when we eat to much. A further research should be carried out in order to confirm these effects and the safety on people.  Scientists find natural way to curb your greed. University of Manchester, (Dr. Garron Dodd, Professor Simon Luckman).

University of Manchester scientists have discovered a naturally-occurring appetite suppressant that could be used to make a diet drug without side effects. Professor Simon Luckman and Dr Garron Dodd believe the peptide hemopressin, which affects the reward part of the brain responsible for hedonistic behaviour, might treat some aspects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Keep weight off, (NHS), The way to keep weight off once you have lost it is by choosing the right weight loss strategy. That means making changes to your diet and physical activity levels that you can stick to for life. If you find that you keep losing weight only to see it creep back on again, then the reason is likely to do with the way you’re losing weight. Dr Andrew Brewster is a GP with a special interest in obesity and weight management. He says that many people who repeatedly lose weight, only to put it back on, blame themselves. Instead, they should blame the weight loss method they used. Choose the right way to lose weight, and you’ll stand a far better chance of keeping the weight off.

Understanding calories. (NHS). Calories are a measure of the amount of energy in food. Knowing how many calories are in our food can help us to balance the energy we put into our bodies with the energy we use. And that's the key to a healthy weight. A calorie is a set amount (unit) of energy.

The Truth about Diet and Weight Loss

I want to talk tonight about weight loss. It's a subject everyone is worried about. And the problem is that diets don't work. Everybody has tried a diet. I haven't met a person yet that's hasn't tried something, from kids to people in their eighties; everybody has tried some kind of diet and they just don't work.

In recent studies when they looked at a lot of their major diets (some good one's, Atkins, The Zone), they put them all together statistically and found a ten pound weight loss on average. Now, these people lost a hundred pounds and gained it back of course. But, all that work, all that money, all those videos, for ten pounds of weight loss?

So the truth is, we have to find a life style that will allow you to stay at a weight that is healthy for you. That's a much different way of thinking than all this crash dieting that goes on. What you have to learn is how to take care of yourself; you have to learn the appropriate foods; you have to make better choices. That's the only way it's going to work.

Top 10 Weight Loss Mistakes, How to Lose Weight & Keep It Off, Psychetruth Nutrition Secrets   Psychetruth YouTube Channel
Losing weight can be difficult for many and may seem impossible to some. With all the fad diets and conflicting information out there, it can be stressful and confusing. In this free video, Corrina counts down the top ten worst mistakes that people make when trying to lose weight. Dieting does not mean you have to be hungry or starving all the time.

You may not be a chubby couch potato, but most of us would like to lose weight and have a more trim, more sexy body. While being a magazine cover model isn't realistic for most of us, make sure that you aren't making these weight loss mistakes to ensure healthy and sustained weightloss, meaning, you can lose the weight and keep it off!

To get into good shape, it's important to improve your diet and to exercise. To improve your performance, tone your physique, get six pack abs or lose belly fat, find an exercise routine that works for you. Swimming, running, aerobics, bodybuilding, weight lifting, yoga, dance, sports, mixed martial arts and even just running on a treadmill are all great options.

Diet and fitness together will help you reach your weight loss goals. Counting calories, starving yourself, or eating a diet high in processed, refined foods are just a few of the mistakes in this video. If you're expecting instant changes, an entire body transformation and weight loss journey in a matter of days or weeks, this is another dangerous mistake. Turning to prescription or over-the-counter drugs or to plastic surgery can also be much worse for your overall health.

Sugar increases stress. When we're under stress, our stress hormone levels rise. These chemicals are the body's fight or flight to prepare the body for an attack or an escape. These chemicals are also called into action when blood sugar is low. A diet could effect this after, for example, eating a chocolate bar the blood sugar in your body may rise. The body may then try to offset or counterbalance for this by releasing stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol. These stress hormones can make us feel anxious, irritable and nervous.

Scientists turn bad fat into 'good' calorie-burning fat. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore initially tried to reduce body fat and weight gain in rats by suppressing the production of an appetite-stimulating protein called neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the part of the brain which helps to regulate hunger and thirst. The findings showed that rats treated this way gained less weight after five weeks, compared with untreated rats which became obese, showing that suppressing NPY led to a less calories being consumed. However, when the scientists examined the rats with suppressed NPY, they discovered that some of their white fat had been replaced with calories burning brown fat. The scientists speculated that white fat tissue may contain some brown fat cells which become activated when NPY is suppressed. In the future, it may be possible to transplant or inject brown fat stem cells under the skin to burn white fat and stimulate weight loss, the researchers said. Dr Sheng Bi, at the university's school of medicine, who led the research said: "If we could get the human body to turn "bad fat" into "good fat" that burns calories instead of storing them, we could add a serious new tool to tackle the obesity epidemic." The findings are published in the journal Cell Metabolism, Cell Web site. 10 ways to feel full, not fat. Do you find that you are never feeling satisfied after a meal or just an hour or so later you are reaching for a snack to pick you up? Well, we're here to help with some feel-full strategies. Granted there are foods that can boost your feelings of fullness but how, when and where you eat your meals can also have a bearing on your full factor too. Here are 10 ways to keep your dining habits in check to maximize your feelings of satiety and satisfaction.

Sensing Fat. Are genes that alter the perception of fat making us fat? People the world over are getting fatter. Today more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese, and the rates in other industrialized countries are catching up. Obesity is no longer considered a condition particular to affluent societies—it has now spread to developing nations such as China and India, resulting in a global health crisis. According to the World Health Organization, 500 million adults worldwide are now obese, and this number is expected to climb well into the foreseeable future. Published on The Scientist.

Most types of articles nearly always point at personal reasonability but it is it not Governments who allow this and the money making business and the shops pushing poor quality fatty foods at everyone from every angle even sometime usung a suggestion that these are healthy.

Genetic have not changed over the years but advertising of bad diet foods have.

Yet not much is or has been done to reduce these promotions of poor quality foods.

Is this because money can be made to out of this e.g. to make people overweight and then money can be made out of helping them lose that weight?
