A young person will probably not have a total understanding of the situation.
They may have their emotions overlooked because they are expected sometimes just to understand and are not told enough details to have a true understanding.
They may also be told a biased view of what has occurred by people they are expected to trust. This may lead to a conflict which may only reveal itself in later life.
They are sometimes expected to be resilient to such issues.
In one sense they are expected to behave in an adult way but do not necessary have all the same experiences of life an adult would have.
Their friends are also unlikely to understand the event that occurred. They are only likely to have an incorrect knowledge from television.
They may not be able to have time off school because of important exams.
They may also be told misinformation about the event.
The confusion may then lead the youth to form the incorrect reasons for what has occurred. They may develop guilty feelings and blame other issues for causing the stressful situation. They may think that it happened because they are too fat or too thin.
They may then develop behaviours that fulfill these beliefs about themselves.
They may over eat, under eat or become very withdrawn for example.
If their family move to a new area they may find it difficult to cope; a new area, a new school, new friends, new teachers, etc.
They may miss family members more than they would like to admit.
