How fear flows through the mind. A neuronal circuit in the brain acts like a seesaw to control fear impulses, reveals a surprisingly up-close look at neurons. Researchers have identified two neuron populations in the brain that work together to control fear impulses.

The Amygdala. Joseph LeDoux. Center for Neural Science, New York University. The amygdala is a complex structure involved in a wide range of normal behavioral functions and psychiatric conditions. Not so long ago it was an obscure region of the brain that attracted relatively little scientific interest. Today it is one of the most heavily studied brain areas, and practically a household word. Art critics are explaining the impact of a painting by its direct impact on the amygdala; essential oils are said to alter mood by affecting the amygdala; and there is a website where you can unleash your creativity by clicking your amygdala, and thereby popping your frontal cortex. This Primer will focus on the scientific implications of the research, discussing the anatomical structure, connectivity, cellular properties and behavioral functions of the amygdala.

Lifeline’s grant is funded by the The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched the Mental Health Campaign for Mental Health Recovery, (What a Difference), to encourage, educate, and inspire people between 18 and 25 to support their friends who are experiencing mental health problems. The prevalence of serious mental health conditions in this age group is almost double that of the general population, yet young people have the lowest rate of help-seeking behaviors. This group has a high potential to minimize future disability if social acceptance is broadened and they receive the right support and services early on. The opportunity for recovery is more likely in a society of acceptance, and this initiative is meant to inspire young people to serve as the mental health vanguard, motivating a societal change toward acceptance and decreasing the negative attitudes that surround mental illness. Mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation, enabling a person with a mental health problem to live a meaningful life in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his or her full potential. Our work is important. Discrimination and stigma have made it harder and harder for people with mental illnesses to keep a job, find a home, get health insurance, and find treatment. This site is here for people living with mental illness—and their friends. You'll find tools to help in the recovery process, and you can also learn about the different kinds of mental illnesses, read real-life stories about support and recovery, and interact with the video to see how friends can make all the difference.

National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. NICE is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health.

Pharmacy Checker Verification Program was established in 2003 to help consumers find qualified online pharmacies. The PharmacyChecker Seal indicates that a website markets prescription drugs dispensed from a pharmacy in good standing.

Internet Mailorder Pharmacy Accreditation Commistion ,IMPAC is dedicated to the promotion of consumer safety and quality improvement. Their Goals: Define quality and safety in a single set of domestic and international standards. Promote consumer safety through a standardized accreditation process. Improve service performance. Provide a mechanism to assist the federal and state governmental agencies and professional and trade associations with quality and safety oversight.

The Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributors (VAWD) Program Information NABP was established in 1904 to assist state licensing boards in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards to protect the Public Health. Pharmacy boards from 50 United states, the District of Columbia, three US territories, eight Canadian provinces, two Australian states, and South Africa make up the Association membership. In response to public concern of the safety of pharmacy practices on the Internet, the Association developed the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) program in the spring of 1999. A coalition of state and federal regulatory associations, professional associations, and consumer advocacy groups provided their expertise in developing the criteria that VIPPS-certified pharmacies follow. To be VIPPS certified, a pharmacy must comply with the licensing and inspection requirements of their state and each state to which they dispense pharmaceuticals. In addition, pharmacies displaying the VIPPS seal have demonstrated to NABP compliance with VIPPS criteria including patient rights to privacy, authentication and security of prescription orders, adherence to a recognized quality assurance policy, and provision of meaningful consultation between patients and pharmacists.

POhWER services are independent, free and confidential Advocacy Support Centre. Not limited to health issues.

Patient Advice and Liaison Service, known as PALS, has been introduced to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, and answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible. PALS also helps the NHS to improve services by listening to what matters to patients and their loved ones and making changes, when appropriate.

What does PALS do?

PALS In particular, PALS will:

Provide you with information about the NHS and help you with any other health-related enquiry

Help resolve concerns or problems when you are using the NHS

Provide information about the NHS complaints procedure and how to get independent help if you decide you may want to make a complaint

Provide you with information and help introduce you to agencies and support groups outside the NHS

Inform you about how you can get more involved in your own healthcare and the NHS locally

Improve the NHS by listening to your concerns, suggestions and experiences and ensuring that people who design and manage services are aware of the issues you raise

Provide an early warning system for NHS Trusts and monitoring bodies by identifying problems.

The Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS) supports patients and their carers wishing to pursue a complaint about their NHS treatment or care. This statutory service was launched on 1 September 2003 and provides for the first time a national service delivered to agreed quality standards.

What is the Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS)?

ICAS provides advocacy support to people who wish to make a complaint about the service - or lack of it - that they have received from the NHS.

Most people are happy with the care they receive from the NHS, but sometimes things don’t go quite as expected.

Everyone has a right to complain if they feel something has gone wrong, and for this reason the NHS has a Complaints Procedure which can help you to get the answers and explanations you may have been seeking. All services provided by the NHS are covered including GPs, hospitals, pharmacies, opticians and dentists.
Our ICAS advocates will support you through the NHS complaints process. They will explain the options available and support you to pursue your chosen course of action. We will only do what you ask us to and will not try to tell you what to do. We do not investigate or encourage complaints, nor do we offer legal or medical advice.

The ICAS service is free, independent and confidential.

The Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) Service is available to those who meet the criteria as laid out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

The Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) Service is available to those who meet the criteria as laid out in the Mental Health Act.

Sugar increases stress. When we're under stress, our stress hormone levels rise. These chemicals are the body's fight or flight to prepare the body for an attack or an escape. These chemicals are also called into action when blood sugar is low. A diet could effect this after, for example, eating a chocolate bar the blood sugar in your body may rise. The body may then try to offset or counterbalance for this by releasing stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol. These stress hormonescan make us feel anxious, irritable and nervous.

Emotional Freedom Techniques EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses a new cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians). Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched the Mental Health Campaign for Mental Health Recovery, (What a Difference), to encourage, educate, and inspire people between 18 and 25 to support their friends who are experiencing mental health problems.

Re-evaluation Counselling is a process whereby people of all ages and of all backgrounds can learn how to exchange effective help with each other in order to free themselves from the effects of past distress experiences. Re-evaluation Counselling theory provides a model of what a human being can be like in the area of his/her interaction with other human beings and his/her environment. The theory assumes that everyone is born with tremendous intellectual potential, natural zest, and lovingness, but that these qualities have become blocked and obscured in adults as the result of accumulated distress experiences (fear, hurt, loss, pain, anger, embarrassment, etc.) which begin early in our lives.

Neurosurgery for mental disorder (psychosurgery) (MIND). Neurosurgery for mental disorder (NMD), is a neurosurgical treatment on the frontal lobes of the brain (the part behind the forehead), involving the limbic system. The limbic system is a part of the brain concerned with functions not under conscious control, and with emotional response. NMD is not generally carried out to alter behaviour. It is usually used to treat severe, incapacitating, non-schizophrenic mood disorders when all other attempts at treatment have failed and the alternative is continuing suffering for the patient. Nowadays, it is most commonly used to treat severe depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. It is not considered to be curative, and people who undergo NMD will probably continue to need psychiatric support following the procedure even if it is considered to be a success.
