These are common words you may hear if you suffer from anxiety or phobia.
The people who tell you to "pull your socks up", "pull your self together" generally would not even consider telling a physically disabled person to make a better effort. This is because their disability is able to be seen and can be explained or reasoned easily.
Anxiety and stress result in a faster metabolic rate, faster heart beat, higher sugar energy burn, etc. See The Effects of Stress on the Body
Once these symptoms reduce the body and mind may feel lathery and tired. These feelings may result in feelings of depression.
These feelings can have a knock on effect because you feel tired and don't want to do anything you may feel lazy or may even be accused of being lazy. This can result in feelings of guilt because you feel or are told your are lazy, bone ideal, and need to "pull your self together", etc.
This is not the case, you are tired because of a reason and just like an athlete who has just finished a race you need some rest. As well as the physical tiredness you may feel, although not realising it, mental exhaustion.
It should be noted that if people feel "sorry for you" this could also cause problems. People who constantly "help" you are not allowing you to face and conquer the anxiety.
One of the reasons that some people patronise is because it gives then a scene of control and power. It also gives them and an "ego trip" because they are able to do things you aren't. They are able to dominate the situation. This may undermine your confidence and self esteem even more and make you feel even less able to carry out normal day to day tasks. The circle of anxiety resulting in a lack of self confidence begins. After a while you may become conditioned to believe that you are unable to do things. You may start to avoid situations that would result in you experiencing these problems and develop a phobia.
A fine balancing act exists between allowing you to use your strengths and support you without patronising you. This is one reason you may benefit from the help of a professional person.
There’s a lot of stigma and ignorance surrounding mental health problems, often making those in need of help reluctant to talk to anyone about how they feel. Read the facts and dispel the myths of mental illness.
